iPhone App Marketing – The Basics

This post covers some real basics of iPhone App Marketing. For those of you with more knowledge about App marketing then you can bypass this introductory post. However, if you’re starting out, this one is definitely worth reading. With anything, it is vitally important you cover the basics and get the core platform right in order to launch your product.

Hipstamatic, Angry Birds and Instapaper are just three of the phenomenally successful iPhone apps of recent years. But these applications did not just become a huge hit because they were such great ideas – their makers also invested in smart and savvy marketing.

As with any product, you have to advertise an app if you want to make a profit and it is important to devise a clever iPhone app marketing campaign that is tailored to your product and target audience.

Check your competition

A good starting point is to take a look at your competitors. Write a list of the firms and apps that you consider yourself to be up against, research their marketing campaigns and decide which ones are good and why. While you do not want to copy another company’s advertising work, you can use it as a platform to develop your own ideas.

Find your audience

You also need to identify your audience and target the marketing directly at them. A campaign aimed at 18-25 year olds will be very different to one that is devised for the over 60s. Next, find out the best ways to reach your audience. If your app relates to a certain profession, it would be wise to advertise in a leading industry publication, for example.

Use what you already know..

One effective way to capture the attention of your target audience is to use social media marketing. Sites such as Twitter and Facebook allow you to directly communicate with your audience and keep them up to date with new developments to your app and any offers you may have. By encouraging your fans to share statuses and Tweets about your app, word will spread virally and win you new fans too.

This is a fantastic and low-cost marketing method if you invest time in it.

Most importantly, make sure your app is the best it can be before you launch it. Don’t ever sacrifice quality for time and cost. You may be tempted to rush your product into the App Store so you can start selling it, but make sure you have ironed out all the bugs and problems first. This will encourage your customers to leave positive instead of negative reviews and being able to show your past customers were happy is a very important step in creating the perfect iPhone app marketing campaign.

Listen and Learn.

From them on, as you have all your social media channels ready – it’s much easier to listen and communicate with your users and because of this you can easily iterate and make changes to your product based on user feedback. It’s really important to understand that if you ‘don’t listen to your users, you won’t end up with any.
